Parent involvement is very important during a student’s middle school years.  I realize that parent and family involvement is a part of a student’s success.  Young adolescents need the support and guidance of those around them and as a parent you have a large impact on your son or daughter’s life.  During the middle school years your child may act as though they do not want you around, but they need you.  They will continue to look to you for guidance and advice although they might not always take it the way that you would like.

School is one place for you to become involved in your child’s life.  They spend so much time at school and having a parent or family member there is one more way to spend more time with them.  I will have various projects and perhaps fieldtrips throughout the year and I will always be looking for parents as volunteers to help out; whether it is financially or physically being there.  If you are unable to help out I understand that as well.  There will also be plenty of chances for volunteering at the school as well.  I will also be inviting you to attended one or more teacher-parent conferences throughout the year.  My plan is to meet with you at least once, but if you feel the need to meet with me more we can certainly do that.

Staying active in your child’s learning is important, even if you don’t understand what they are doing.  Supporting them and encouraging them, especially with homework is the main thing.  Ask them how they are doing in their classes and ask to see their graded assignments.  Homework will always be something that we have covered in class and your child should have some idea of how to do it.  Homework will also have problems in it related to the real world.  Your experience with science in your life will be helpful for the student to relate subjects to the world around them.  If there is one topic in particular that your child seems to be struggling in and you don’t feel comfortable with it feel free to contact me to set up a meeting where I can help you understand the material so that you can help your child at home.  In addition to school work, be involved in other aspects of your son or daughter’s life as well.  Ask how their day went, invite their friends over so you can get to know them and talk to them about their elective classes.  Also encourage them to be involved in some sort of extracurricular activity whether it is a sport or a club.  If they are already in one ask them how it is progressing, go to their games and participate in club activities.  Any involvement is beneficial and important to their education.  I hope that if you are not able to be involved at school, and I understand if you are unable to, that you are at least involved in your student’s home life.  If you would like to become involved in your child’s education please contact me.  I check email often so do not hesitate to send me an email through the contact page provided on the website, even if it is just a small question.  I look forward to seeing you and your family!
